Experience
Freelance Sound Engineer (November 2004 - Present Day)
I am currently self-employed, and do the majority of my work as a touring live sound engineer for bands and PA companies including Capital Sound Hire, Concert Sound and Thames Audio. I am a member of BECTU and hold public liability insurance.
Technical Earth Ltd. (June 2003 - August 2004)
As a Trainee Technical Engineer, I was involved with tasks such as studio installation, Pro Tools system building, service, technical support and wiring.
Guildford Civic Centre (January 2002 - June 2003)
I worked at this venue as a casual in-house sound engineer, while covering lighting, follow spots and local crew work at larger shows until it was closed down for redevelopment.
USSU Stage Crew (September 2001 - July 2005)
As a volunteer, I worked on a regular basis for the University of Surrey Students´ Union while studying for my degree, running shows as FOH/monitor engineer or covering other production roles as required.
Skills
Live audio:
- Over 7 years experience as FOH and monitor mixer with national, European and international touring experience in a wide variety of small to large venues, both in the role of system engineer and band engineer.
- Experience in using a diverse selection of professional modern sound reinforcement equipment, including digital consoles and line arrays with the ability to quickly adapt when faced with unfamiliar hardware.
- Experienced system technician; building, specifying and taking responsibility for complete sound reinforcement systems from vocal PAs to festival band systems, for a wide variety of different requirements.
- Familiarity running sound for a variety of different kinds of events from lectures, theatre and comedy through to bands, DJs, orchestral, corporate parties and festivals.
- An understanding and practical knowledge of dual FFT based audio analysis equipment, most specifically Smaart.
- A good knowledge base of audio theory ranging from acoustics and electro-acoustics to audio engineering and electronics.
- Practical and logical understanding of signal flow and test equipment for swift fault-finding.
Audio recording:
- Several years experience multi-track recording using both analogue and digital recording systems including large-scale in-line consoles and 2" tape.
- Experience making straight to stereo recordings in studio and location settings using co-incident pair, spaced pair, spot and hybrid microphone techniques.
- A broad practical understanding of current computer audio and MIDI sequencing packages, most specifically ProTools.
General:
- Driving licence with category C and category B entitlement, held for over 8 years with experience driving vehicles rated up to 7.5 tonnes, as well as small and large vans/minibuses.
- Experienced wireman with knowledge of most modern single and multi-pin connectors.
- Computer literate with both x86-compatible PCs and Apple Macs, with a working knowledge of networking, commercial office software and programming in XHTML, PHP, MySQL and BASIC.
- Hold a current valid UK passport and available for travel.
- I have an easy-going, friendly, approachable and helpful nature, whilst maintaining a professional attitude at all times.
Interests
I enjoy listening to many kinds of music in my spare time, as well as going to gigs, playing the bass guitar and also keyboards. I used to swim competitively and still enjoy it when I am at home. I have also developed an interest in cooking for when I have free time!
Education
- Graduate with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) classification from the BMus (Hons) Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) course at the University of Surrey.
- Associateship of the University of Surrey with Distinction.
- Attended Dec ´08 Meyer Sound ´SIM3 Training and System Design´ Seminar.
- 3 A´s at ´A´ level in Mathematics, Physics and Music Technology and 1 A at ´AS´ level in Further Maths.
- 9 A-C´s at GCSE level, including 2 A*´s and 5 A´s.
- LVCM (Hons) for Electronic Organ playing and a merit in Grade 6 music theory.
